Broadband expansion in rural UK: £1.3bn investment to revolutionize connectivity for 380,000 premises
In a significant development for digital infrastructure in the United Kingdom, the government has announced a record investment of £1.3 billion towards enhancing broadband connectivity in rural areas. This investment aims to connect nearly 380,000 homes and businesses across the nation, including those in remote locations such as Devon and The Isles of Scilly, to lightning-fast broadband services. The initiative is part of the broader ambition under Project Gigabit, a flagship programme with a budget of £5 billion, aimed at revolutionizing internet access across the country.
At the forefront of this year’s digital push, the UK Government, through departments including Building Digital UK and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, led by Julia Lopez MP, has allocated a record sum of £714 million. This funding is dedicated to expanding rural broadband coverage in 2024 alone, bringing the total investment in next-generation broadband connections to an impressive £1.3 billion. This investment marks a significant milestone in bridging the digital divide, providing rural communities with access to the fastest internet services available, enabling high-definition film downloads in under one minute, and facilitating smoother online shopping and entertainment streaming across multiple devices.
The areas set to benefit from this transformative investment include Yorkshire, Dorset, and notably, the Isles of Scilly. This move is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that the UK’s rural landscapes are not left behind in the digital age. With nearly 82% of properties now able to access gigabit broadband, up from a mere 7% five years ago, the UK is on track to outpace its European neighbours in the rollout of Gigabit broadband.
Julia Lopez MP, Minister for Data and Digital, emphasized the critical nature of connectivity, stating, “Connectivity has never been more important for people and businesses. It is increasingly the enabler for so many services that we rely on every day.” She highlighted the rapid advancement in providing high-quality, gigabit broadband to every corner of the country, including the most remote areas.
Today’s announcement includes a £165 million allocation for contracts across England to build full fibre networks, covering South Yorkshire, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Herefordshire, the Forest of Dean, the Peak District, Dorset, and Somerset. These contracts are poised to benefit almost 90,000 premises, offering speeds up to 1,000 megabits per second—30 times faster than traditional superfast connections.
Furthermore, the UK Government’s investment has already facilitated the upgrade of over one million rural homes, businesses, and public buildings to gigabit-capable networks. These upgrades are critical in areas previously challenged by poor connectivity, enhancing the capacity for local businesses to thrive and improving the quality of life for residents.
In addition to the residential and business upgrades, the government is also focusing on education, with contracts awarded to connect up to 800 primary schools in England. This initiative, part of the Schools Gigabit Connectivity Project, aims to equip students and teachers with the latest digital technology, ensuring that education in rural areas does not lag due to inadequate internet access.
