In a devastating incident, at least 11 people lost their lives with over 30 others reported missing after a bridge collapsed in northern China’s Shaanxi province. The collapse occurred around 8:40 pm local time on Friday, triggered by severe torrential rains and resulting flash floods, according to Xinhua news agency.

The bridge, situated over a river in Shangluo, succumbed to the sudden onslaught of heavy downpours, leading to a catastrophic failure that plunged numerous vehicles and their occupants into the water. CCTV reports that nearly 20 vehicles were involved, with ongoing search and rescue operations attempting to locate more than 30 missing individuals. So far, recovery teams have retrieved five vehicles from the water, all containing the bodies of the confirmed victims.

This tragedy is part of a larger pattern of extreme weather affecting large swathes of China. Earlier in the week, a similar catastrophe unfolded in southern China where a highway collapsed after days of relentless rain, claiming 48 lives. The provinces of northern and central China have been battered by continuous rainfall since Tuesday, causing widespread flooding and significant infrastructural damage.

In Baoji city, also in Shaanxi province, state media reported that recent floods triggered by the rains have led to five deaths and eight people missing, compounding the region’s misery. The flooding has caused extensive damage, with images published by state media showing neighborhoods inundated by muddy waters, and local residents alongside excavators working tirelessly to mitigate the damage.

The semi-desert province of Gansu, neighboring Shaanxi and Henan, has also experienced heavy rainfall this week, illustrating the widespread nature of the current meteorological challenges.
