BP Pulse acquires strategic Ashford Truck Stop to accelerate HGV electrification across Europe

In a significant development within the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure sector, BP Pulse, the specialized electric vehicle charging arm of BP, has completed the acquisition of the freehold for Ashford International Truckstop located in Kent, making it one of the most strategic moves to support the electrification of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in Europe. Positioned near Dover, the busiest ferry port in the UK, and closely connected to the LeShuttle Freight via the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkestone, this acquisition places BP Pulse at the heart of European HGV logistics, ready to serve approximately 3.5 million HGVs crossing the English Channel annually.

The Ashford International Truckstop stands out for its capacity to accommodate a substantial number of mega-watt chargers, with plans to install up to 20 MCS, 10 x 400kW, and 125 x 100 kW chargers. This expansion is contingent upon power connection availability and the pace of the UK and European road freight sector’s electrification. BP Pulse aims to provide a comprehensive range of charging solutions catering to the varied needs of on-the-go and overnight HGVs, marking a pivotal step in facilitating the transition to electric vehicles for fleet operators.

“For fleet operators to consider going electric, they must be confident that the infrastructure is in place to support them. The acquisition not only signifies BP Pulse’s commitment to supporting the decarbonisation of road transportation but also highlights the strategic importance of the Ashford location. With the first mega-watt chargers expected to be operational by 2026, BP Pulse is set to significantly enhance the charging infrastructure available for HGVs, potentially reducing charging times to as little as 45 minutes for a full charge, which can enable an onward range of approximately 310 miles depending on various factors.

The Ashford International Truckstop, previously owned by GSE Group, will continue to provide 660 secure parking bays and convenience services for HGV drivers under a long-term lease agreement, with BP Pulse managing the EV charging infrastructure.
