Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has entered into a significant contract with the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) to deliver 16 Traxx 3 MS electric locomotives and provide 20 years of maintenance services, totalling around €150 million.
The contract extends Alstom’s collaboration with ARF in the rolling stock sector and includes an option to extend the maintenance period by an additional 20 years. This long-term commitment is a testament to Alstom’s established reputation in the railway industry.
Gabriel Stanciu, Managing Director of Alstom Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova, expressed enthusiasm about enhancing Romania’s sustainable mobility with these new electric locomotives. Aligned with Alstom’s global mission, the locomotives are set to make significant contributions to greener transportation in Romania.
The Traxx 3 MS locomotives, capable of reaching speeds of 200 km/h, will be equipped with Alstom’s advanced onboard European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), ensuring efficiency, safety, security, and interoperability. These modern trains are designed to connect major Romanian cities more effectively.
With a flexible and modular design, Traxx locomotives have been homologated in 20 countries and are known for their operational performance, energy efficiency, and extended maintenance intervals. Over 2,700 units have been sold since 2000, underlining their global success.
Alstom’s presence in Romania spans nearly three decades, with key contributions to railway electrification and signalling solutions. The company is involved in various projects, including the Rhine-Danube corridor, Cluj metro system, and Bucharest’s metro Line 5, demonstrating its integral role in the country’s railway development.
