Aker Solutions and Mocean Energy forge alliance for low-carbon ocean power

Aker Solutions Subsea and wave energy specialists Mocean Energy will collaboratively explore low-carbon solutions aimed at extending the life of brownfield energy infrastructure. Through locally generated wave energy, the partnership aims to activate stranded reservoirs, creating a sustainable alternative for powering subsea installations.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed, Pilot Project on the Horizon

The collaboration has been formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU paves the way for feasibility studies, front-end engineering, design, and concept studies to identify cost-effective and environmentally efficient solutions. This ambitious partnership could culminate in the launch of a pilot project in UK waters within the next two years.

Wave-Powered Solutions to Extend Life of Aging Oil Fields

Morten Pedersen, SVP Systems and Products at Aker Solutions, elaborated on the potential benefits of the technology. “Today there are remote, marginal pockets within aging fields that could potentially be powered with this technology at a lower lifetime cost,” he said. These wave-powered tiebacks to stranded reserves could not only extend the life of existing oil and gas assets but also reduce the need for new oilfield developments—a crucial step towards achieving net zero emissions.

Renewables for Subsea Power Initiative and Multi-Customer Joint Projects

Mocean Energy is already a key player in the “Renewables for Subsea Power” initiative, a £2 million project demonstrating the viability of powering subsea equipment with wave power. “Our collaboration will provide customers with a complete solution to their power and communications needs that is reliable and low carbon,” said Cameron McNatt, Managing Director of Mocean Energy. Both companies aim to translate at least one concept study into an operational pilot project through various avenues, including multi-customer joint industry projects.
