Airbus U.S. Space & Defense, Inc. has finalized a significant transaction with Eutelsat OneWeb, acquiring the remaining 50% share of the Airbus OneWeb Satellites (AOS) joint venture, making it the sole owner. This strategic move solidifies Airbus’s position in the small satellite constellation market.
The deal transitions the complete ownership of AOS and its Merritt Island, Florida, satellite manufacturing facility to Airbus. This acquisition is a pivotal step for Airbus in maximizing efficiency and competitiveness in the commercial, institutional, and national security space sectors.
Robert Geckle, Chairman and CEO of Airbus U.S. Space & Defense, emphasizes the company’s commitment to continuing the mass production of small satellites and its excitement about the future prospects on Florida’s Space Coast. The recent retooling of the Merritt Island factory for the Arrow450 production line and the ongoing expansion project highlight Airbus’s dedication to meeting the growing demand for small satellites.
Eutelsat Group, with its focus on optimizing and monetizing its portfolio for debt reduction, has successfully concluded the sale of its stake in AOS to Airbus. Massimiliano Ladovaz of Eutelsat expressed pride in their joint venture’s success in building OneWeb’s First Generation constellation and confidence in the venture’s future under Airbus’s sole ownership.
Since its establishment in 2016, the Airbus OneWeb Satellites joint venture has produced over 600 satellites for the OneWeb first-generation constellation, achieving an impressive production rate of two satellites per day.
Airbus’s acquisition of the remaining stake in AOS from Eutelsat marks a significant milestone in the aerospace industry, reinforcing its leadership in the small satellite market. This development not only enhances Airbus’s manufacturing capabilities but also positions it strongly for future growth and innovation in the rapidly evolving space sector.
The complete acquisition of Airbus OneWeb Satellites by Airbus U.S. Space & Defense represents a strategic consolidation in the aerospace industry. This move signifies Airbus’s intent to further strengthen its position as a market leader in satellite manufacturing, catering to the increasing demand in the commercial and government space markets. The expansion of the Merritt Island facility underlines Airbus’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in satellite production.
