Air India expands fleet with 100 Airbus aircraft, boosting global ambitions

Air India, under Tata Group ownership, has announced the acquisition of 10 A350 widebody aircraft and 90 A320 Family aircraft, reinforcing its ambitious fleet expansion. The new Airbus aircraft order builds on the airline’s prior purchase of 40 A350 widebody aircraft and 210 A320 Family aircraft in 2023, bringing its total Airbus order to an impressive 344.

The latest Air India fleet acquisition, already recorded in Airbus’ 2024 orderbook, underscores the airline’s commitment to its ongoing fleet modernisation programme. This development is integral to the broader transformation effort, “Vihaan.AI,” which aims to re-establish Air India as a global aviation leader. The A350 widebody aircraft, known for its fuel efficiency and long-range capability, has been a key component, with six A350-900s already delivered and operational since January 2024.

Strategic fleet expansion amid growing demand

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, highlighted the strategic rationale behind the expanded Air India fleet. He emphasised that India’s robust aviation market growth, improving aviation infrastructure, and a globally aspirational young population present a compelling case for fleet expansion. Chandrasekaran stated that the additional 100 Airbus aircraft would propel Air India toward its vision of connecting India to every corner of the world while building a world-class airline.

Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, expressed his enthusiasm for the strengthened partnership, acknowledging the rapid growth of the aviation market in India. Faury reiterated Airbus’ commitment to supporting Air India’s transformation through its fleet modernisation programme and this expanded Airbus aircraft order.

Technological advancements in aircraft and maintenance

The A350 widebody aircraft, recognised as the most advanced widebody in its class, offers state-of-the-art aerodynamics, lightweight materials, and next-generation engines. These features result in a 25% reduction in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to older models, alongside a 50% reduction in noise. With a range of up to 9,700 nautical miles, the A350 is ideal for both short-haul and ultra-long-haul routes.

Complementing the A350, the A321neo represents the pinnacle of single-aisle efficiency, delivering more than 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reductions. The aircraft also offers superior passenger comfort with its spacious cabin design.

In addition to its Airbus aircraft order, Air India has partnered with Airbus to adopt Airbus Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) for its growing A350 fleet. The FHS-C agreement ensures optimised aircraft performance and reduced maintenance costs through fully integrated component services, access to regional spare pools, and engineering expertise. This partnership aligns with Air India’s goals of enhanced operational efficiency under its fleet modernisation programme.
