Adani Total Gas launches green hydrogen pilot project ahead of COP 28
In anticipation of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in the UAE from 30 November to 12 December 2023, Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL), co-promoted by the Adani Group and TotalEnergies, has announced the start of a groundbreaking ‘Green Hydrogen Production and Blending Pilot Project’. This initiative represents a significant advancement in sustainable energy solutions and is a noteworthy step towards environmental sustainability.
Green Hydrogen Technology and Its Implementation
Adani Total Gas will utilize cutting-edge technology to blend Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, serving over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GH2, produced through electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources, offers a less carbon-intensive alternative to traditional gas while maintaining the same heating capabilities.
Project Timeline and Environmental Impact
Slated for commissioning by Q1 FY24-25, the project aims to gradually increase the green hydrogen blend to up to 8% or more, subject to regulatory approvals. Successful completion of the pilot will lead to a stepwise expansion of hydrogen-blended fuel supply across Ahmedabad and other licensed areas of Adani Total Gas. Studies indicate that an up to 8% hydrogen blend could reduce emissions by up to 4%.
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
Adani Total Gas seeks to collaborate with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share its experiences and develop a comprehensive understanding of hydrogen blending in city gas distribution in India. This initiative is also aimed at gaining insights into the operational aspects and compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.
Executive Insights
Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director & CEO of Adani Total Gas Ltd., stated, “We are fully committed to building an environmentally sustainable operation. This project represents our ongoing dedication towards India’s energy independence by 2047. By investing in such innovative projects, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and driving progress in sustainable energy solutions.”
In summary, the launch of Adani Total Gas’ Green Hydrogen Production and Blending Pilot Project marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of sustainable and renewable energy solutions in India, aligning with the global movement towards environmental preservation and innovative energy strategies.
