Adani Power spearheads green ammonia pilot at Mundra plant for reduced CO2 emissions

As global leaders gather at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in the UAE, Adani Power Ltd., India’s largest private sector power generator, announces a revolutionary step in its decarbonization efforts. The company has launched a green ammonia combustion pilot project at its Mundra plant, aligning with the global push to fast-track energy transition and reduce emissions before 2030.

Mundra Plant’s Green Ammonia Pilot: A Step Towards Carbon Neutrality

The Mundra Plant, India’s largest private sector power facility, will co-fire up to 20% green ammonia in a 330MW coal-fired unit. This green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen produced through renewable energy-powered electrolysis, offers a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels. The initiative places Adani Power at the forefront of the industry for ‘per-unit’ emissions reduction, utilizing ultra-supercritical technology in its latest plants.

Collaboration with Japanese Industry Giants

Adani Power has partnered with Japan’s IHI Corporation and Kowa for this pilot, marking a significant collaboration under the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership (CEP). The project, part of the “International Demonstration Project for Japanese Technologies Contributing to Decarbonization and Energy Transition,” is supported by NEDO, Japan’s national R&D agency. The partnership aims to ensure energy security, achieve carbon neutrality, and promote economic growth.

Technological Advancements and Global Recognition

The Mundra plant is the first location outside of Japan selected for this cutting-edge initiative. Tests at IHI’s facility in Japan have begun with a 20% ammonia blend, simulating the Mundra Power Station equipment. These tests are critical for achieving economic parity between both feedstocks, a necessary step for full implementation at the Mundra station.
