Acuity earnings jump as Intelligent Spaces growth drives $4.6bn year despite revenue miss

Acuity posted $4.6 billion in annual sales and 36% EPS growth, but shares fell after earnings. Find out what investors are watching next.

Acuity Inc. reported fiscal 2026 net sales of $4.64 billion, up 6.8%, while diluted earnings per share increased 36.1% to $17.05 as stronger profitability and rapid expansion at Acuity Intelligent Spaces helped offset weaker results in the company’s traditional lighting business. Fourth-quarter sales reached approximately $1.26 billion, up 2.9%, while diluted earnings per share jumped 56% to $5.63 and adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 11% to $5.77.

The headline earnings growth was accompanied by exceptionally strong cash generation. Acuity Inc. produced approximately $825.6 million of operating cash flow during fiscal 2026, up substantially from the previous year, giving the company enough financial flexibility to repay debt, increase its dividend and spend $287.2 million repurchasing more than 940,000 shares.

However, investors focused on a less impressive part of the quarter. Adjusted earnings per share of $5.77 exceeded Wall Street expectations, but fourth-quarter revenue came in below the approximately $1.25 billion consensus forecast, contributing to a selloff in Acuity Inc. shares following the release. Early trading showed the stock down roughly 4% from its previous close of $309.81 as the market weighed stronger margins against slower-than-expected sales and a more moderate fiscal 2027 growth outlook.

The results also highlight how rapidly Acuity Inc.’s business mix is changing. Acuity Brands Lighting still generates the majority of company revenue, but Acuity Intelligent Spaces has become the main growth engine, with full-year sales increasing 44.8% to approximately $1.1 billion while adjusted operating profit jumped 55.2% to $255 million.

Acuity Intelligent Spaces becomes the clear growth engine as lighting revenue remains under pressure

Acuity Intelligent Spaces generated fourth-quarter sales of $297.6 million, representing year-over-year growth of 16.6%. Operating profit surged 131.1% to $64.7 million, while adjusted operating profit increased 35.7% to $74.1 million and adjusted operating margin expanded 350 basis points to 24.9%.

The full-year numbers make the division’s growing importance even clearer. Acuity Intelligent Spaces produced approximately $1.1 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue, up $342.3 million or 44.8%, while operating profit increased 145.1% to $186.5 million and adjusted operating profit rose 55.2% to $255 million.

The segment houses technologies from businesses including Distech Controls and QSC, LLC, which allow Acuity Inc. to move beyond conventional lighting equipment into building management, audio, controls and connected-space technology. Management has positioned the division around making physical environments smarter, safer and more efficient, creating exposure to digital building infrastructure rather than relying solely on replacement and construction demand for lighting products.

That diversification increasingly matters because Acuity Brands Lighting has been considerably weaker. Fourth-quarter lighting sales declined slightly to $958.7 million, while full-year revenue fell 1% to approximately $3.6 billion, showing that overall company growth is increasingly being generated by the smaller Intelligent Spaces division rather than the traditional lighting operation.

Lighting margins remain resilient even as Acuity Brands Lighting struggles to generate sales growth

Acuity Brands Lighting generated fourth-quarter operating profit of $188.8 million, up 3.2% even though sales slipped 0.4%. Operating margin expanded 70 basis points to 19.7%, indicating that productivity and pricing actions helped protect profitability despite softer revenue.

Adjusted results were somewhat less favorable. Adjusted operating profit declined 7.1% to $179.8 million and adjusted operating margin fell 130 basis points to 18.8%, while full-year adjusted operating profit declined 2.5% to $646 million.

Management also recorded $14.7 million of fourth-quarter special charges related to product portfolio changes, supply-chain initiatives and adjustments to the operating footprint within Acuity Brands Lighting. Those actions suggest Acuity Inc. is continuing to reshape the division rather than accepting slower revenue growth as a permanent limitation.

Chief Executive Officer Neil Ashe has previously outlined a strategy centered on increasing product vitality, improving service levels, using technology to differentiate products and operations, and driving productivity. Acuity Inc. continues to target long-term adjusted operating margin expansion of approximately 50 to 100 basis points annually within the lighting business, although fiscal 2027 sales are expected to remain relatively subdued.

Acuity generates $826 million of operating cash flow while reducing debt and repurchasing shares

Acuity Inc.’s cash generation was one of the strongest elements of the fiscal 2026 results. Net cash from operating activities reached approximately $825.6 million, giving the company substantial flexibility to fund acquisitions, reduce leverage and return capital to shareholders without relying heavily on external financing.

The company repaid $200 million of term-loan debt during fiscal 2026 and another $200 million after year-end. Management said those payments fully repaid the borrowings originally used to finance the acquisition of QSC, LLC, demonstrating how rapidly Acuity Inc. has been able to deleverage after expanding its Intelligent Spaces platform.

Shareholder returns also increased. Acuity Inc. raised its dividend by 18% and spent $287.2 million repurchasing more than 940,000 shares during fiscal 2026, while management said the company has bought back nearly 11 million shares since the beginning of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020 at an average price of approximately $164.

That cumulative repurchase program represents nearly 28% of the share count that existed when the program began. Continued reductions in outstanding shares can support per-share earnings growth when operating income rises, although investors will still need to distinguish improvements caused by underlying business growth from those supported by a smaller denominator.

Tariff refunds and special charges complicate Acuity’s 56% quarterly EPS increase

Acuity Inc.’s 56% increase in reported fourth-quarter diluted earnings per share is impressive, but several unusual items affected the year-over-year comparison. The company received $44.9 million of tariff refunds during the quarter while recording $17.8 million of special charges related primarily to the lighting operation and an Intelligent Spaces facility impairment.

Management excluded those items when calculating adjusted results. Adjusted diluted earnings per share increased a more moderate 11% to $5.77, compared with reported diluted earnings per share of $5.63, providing a better indication of the improvement in ongoing operations after removing the quarter’s exceptional items.

Full-year figures show a similar distinction. Reported diluted earnings per share increased 36.1% to $17.05, while adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 10.5% to $19.90, reflecting meaningful underlying growth but less dramatic expansion than the reported figure alone suggests.

The broader operating improvement nevertheless appears substantial. Full-year operating profit climbed 26.6% to $713.7 million and operating margin improved 240 basis points to 15.4%, while adjusted operating profit increased 7.8% to $828.7 million.

Fiscal 2027 guidance points to slower sales growth but continued earnings expansion

Acuity Inc. expects fiscal 2027 net sales between $4.7 billion and $4.9 billion, compared with approximately $4.64 billion in fiscal 2026. The range implies overall growth of roughly 1% to 5%, substantially slower than the 6.8% increase delivered during the latest fiscal year.

Management expects Acuity Brands Lighting revenue to range from roughly flat to low-single-digit growth, while Acuity Intelligent Spaces is projected to continue expanding at a low- to mid-teens rate. Adjusted diluted earnings per share are expected to reach between $20.50 and $22, compared with $19.90 in fiscal 2026.

One emerging headwind is higher memory-component costs within Acuity Intelligent Spaces. Management expects those increases to reduce the segment’s gross margin by approximately 200 basis points during fiscal 2027, with the impact becoming more visible late in the first quarter and continuing into the second quarter as higher-cost inventory moves through the business.

Acuity Inc. plans to offset those pressures through pricing, product changes and productivity improvements. Management has emphasized maintaining component availability for customers first and recovering higher costs over time, suggesting margins could experience temporary pressure even if revenue growth remains healthy.

Acuity stock falls as investors focus on revenue miss and more moderate 2027 outlook

Acuity Inc. shares entered the earnings announcement at $309.81 after gaining modestly in the previous session. The stock fell sharply following the release, with early trading showing a decline of roughly 4% to 5% as investors reacted to the revenue miss and assessed fiscal 2027 guidance.

The response is notable because earnings themselves exceeded expectations. Adjusted earnings per share of $5.77 were above the roughly $5.66 analyst estimate cited by Investing.com, but quarterly revenue missed expectations by about 4%, suggesting investors were more concerned about the pace of top-line expansion than current profitability.

The stock reaction also reflects higher expectations created by Acuity Inc.’s improving business mix and strong earlier performance. Acuity Intelligent Spaces is delivering double-digit growth and attractive margins, meaning investors may increasingly expect that segment to offset weakness within lighting and support faster consolidated growth.

Fiscal 2027 guidance does not necessarily point to deterioration, but it does suggest a more measured expansion phase. Acuity Inc. expects earnings to continue growing despite relatively modest total revenue gains, which will place greater emphasis on margin discipline, Intelligent Spaces growth and continued productivity improvements.

The fundamental picture therefore looks stronger than the immediate stock reaction alone implies, but the market is demanding evidence that Acuity Intelligent Spaces can keep scaling while lighting stabilizes. Strong cash flow and a reduced debt burden give management considerable flexibility, yet future valuation gains are likely to depend more on sustained organic growth than financial engineering.
