Lockheed Martin opens advanced $18m engineering facility in Huntsville
Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense and local Alabama officials, recently inaugurated an $18 million engineering facility and labs in Huntsville. This 122,000-square foot facility, designed to house 500 employees, signifies a major advancement in national security capabilities and innovation in North Alabama.
Strategic Expansion Enhances National Security
Stephanie C. Hill, president of Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, emphasized the facility’s role in bolstering national security across multiple domains—land, sea, air, space, and cyber. “The crucial work being done here…has made Alabama a key 21st-century, high-tech defense and deterrence provider,” Hill stated. The site will focus on various cutting-edge projects including the readiness and sustainment of the U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, with the team gearing up for a modernized Black Hawk under the upcoming Multi-Year XI contract.

Alabama’s Commitment to Defense
Governor Kay Ivey highlighted the importance of this facility in strengthening the state’s role in national defense: “Lockheed Martin’s continued investment in Alabama is a testament to the strength of our workforce and the strategic importance of Huntsville in shaping the future of defense.” The new facility expands Lockheed Martin’s presence in Alabama, where the company now operates 30 sites and employs over 3,300 individuals.
Advancing 21st Century Security
The facility will support the Missile Defense Agency’s Command and Control, Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC) system, providing integrated missile defense capabilities worldwide. Additionally, it will aid the Ballistic Missile Defense System through the Modeling and Simulation Contract – Framework and Tools program.
A notable feature of the new site is the Lockheed Martin Rotary Wing Innovation Center, which includes a modernized Sikorsky Black Hawk mission simulator. This center will serve as a collaborative space for military, government, and industry stakeholders to advance Army aviation technology.
