In a stunning reversal and momentous moment, the European Union decided on Thursday to initiate accession negotiations with war-torn Ukraine, marking a significant shift in Europe’s political landscape. This decision, made during a Brussels summit of the EU’s 27 leaders and chaired by European Council President Charles Michel, signals a clear message of hope to Ukraine and the continent.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the agreement as a monumental victory for Ukraine and Europe. The move, while set against a backdrop of prolonged conflict, marks a new chapter in Ukraine’s aspiration for EU membership, a process expected to span many years.
Despite this momentous decision, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s steadfast opposition remained a focal point. In a dramatic turn of events, Orban allowed the unanimous decision to proceed, stepping aside in what some EU officials described as a pre-agreed and constructive manner. This gesture, while not altering his stance, was crucial in enabling the landmark decision.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo interpreted the decision as a strong rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing Europe’s unwavering support for Ukraine.
Simultaneously, the EU also decided to commence membership negotiations with Moldova, showcasing the Union’s expanding influence in Eastern Europe.
However, this historic decision does not come without challenges. The EU must now tackle the vital task of supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion, a contentious topic further complicated by Orban’s initial vow to block financial aid to Kyiv.
In Kyiv, residents greeted the news with cautious optimism, recognizing it as a pivotal step towards Europe but mindful of the uncertain road ahead. The summit, expected to stretch into the weekend, surprised many with its rapid conclusion, further underscoring the EU’s commitment to Ukraine.
EU leaders, adorned in Ukraine’s national colors and echoing the rallying cry “Slava Ukraini!” – “Glory to Ukraine!” – have once again demonstrated their solidarity and resolve in the face of adversity, reinforcing the EU’s credibility on the global stage.
