Kamuthi power plant in India becomes world’s largest solar plant

A new 648 MW solar power plant has been built in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, covering an area of 2500 acres.

The power plant facility is located in Kamuthi and is now the largest solar power plant in the world surpassing the 550 MW Topaz Solar Farm in California.

Built by Adani Power in just eight months, the Kamuthi power plant covers a single location. Robotic system is utilized in cleaning the solar power plant which gets charged by its own solar panels.

The new Tamil Nadu solar power plant is estimated to produce enough electricity which can power up 150,000 homes at full capacity.

The project consists of 2.5 million individual solar modules built at $679 million cost.

With this new solar power plant, India has reached the installed solar capacity across 10 GW mark as stated by research firm Bridge.

With the increase in solar power, India is expected to become the world’s third biggest solar market after China and the US from next year.

In order to achieve the targets set by the government, India has to increase its take-up of solar panels despite of the fast growing solar power industry.

India aims to provide electricity to 60 million homes by 2022, which is a part of government’s goal to generate 40% power using non-fossil fuels by 2030.

Environmental groups have praised the Indian government’s strategy as it can also reduce the country’s problem of air quality.
