Customers of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, the three main U.S. mobile carriers, are currently experiencing significant disruptions in international roaming services. This issue is impacting American travelers abroad, making it difficult or even impossible for them to use data, send messages, or make phone calls. Reports suggest that about thirty percent of Verizon’s customers are facing failed international calls and data connections.
The problem originates from a complication with Syniverse, an international third-party communications service that facilitates international roaming for numerous carriers. Early Thursday morning, Syniverse reported connectivity issues which have subsequently affected the service for countless mobile customers globally.
A spokesperson for T-Mobile stated to CNN, “We’re one of several providers impacted by a third-party vendor’s issue that is intermittently affecting some international roaming service. We’re working with them to resolve it.” Syniverse has been actively working with its network partners since the onset of these issues to restore full service.
Despite the technical efforts, the situation has led to considerable inconvenience for travelers. Syniverse acknowledged the impact of the outage, expressing understanding and appreciation for customers’ patience as they navigate through these challenges.
This outage underscores the vulnerability of global telecommunications infrastructure and the cascading effects that can occur due to issues in one part of the network. As the carriers and Syniverse strive to resolve the outage, customers are advised to seek alternative communication methods and stay updated through their carrier’s customer service channels.
The ongoing outage highlights the critical reliance on third-party vendors in the telecommunications industry and the need for robust contingency plans to mitigate such disruptions. This incident will likely prompt a reassessment of service agreements and emergency protocols among major carriers to prevent future occurrences.
