Walmart de México achieves historic milestone with Bodega Aurrera expansion

Situated on Boulevard de la Luz in Mexicali, Baja California, this landmark store spans nearly 2,000 square metres of sales floor (about 21,000 square feet) and has created over 50 direct jobs, with 57% filled by women and 5% by individuals with disabilities.

Bodega Aurrera, a staple of Walmex’s operations, provides accessible pricing on a wide range of products, including groceries, household goods, electronics, and toys. Since its founding in 1958 with a single location in City, the brand has grown into a household name, serving over 580 cities across Mexico and employing more than 91,000 associates, 60% of whom are women.

The new store reinforces the company’s omnichannel approach, offering self-checkout, in-store pickup, and home delivery, alongside services like pharmacy and medical discounts, financial solutions through the Cashi app, and even mobile phone connectivity via the Bait network.

Tomas Durandeau, Senior Vice President of Bodega Aurrera, celebrated the milestone as a reflection of both the brand’s enduring legacy and its economic contributions to Mexico. He highlighted the company’s dedication to enhancing the lives of customers by saving money and improving accessibility to essential services.

Durandeau emphasised the importance of the workforce in this achievement, noting the critical role played by associates in ensuring customer trust over six decades of operation.
