UK govt approves major upgrades for A1 Northumberland – Morpeth to Ellingham route

The Secretary of State for Transport has granted development consent for substantial upgrades along the A1 in Northumberland, stretching from Morpeth to Ellingham. The application for the upgrades was submitted by National Highways to the Planning Inspectorate on July 7, 2020, and was accepted for examination less than a month later, on August 4, 2020. Following a comprehensive six-month examination period, during which evidence was collected from the public, statutory consultees, and interested parties, recommendations were made to the Secretary of State on October 5, 2021.

This project involves two key sections:

1. A1 Morpeth to Felton: This segment will see approximately 8 miles of the A1 between Morpeth and Felton upgraded to dual carriageway standards.

2. A1 Alnwick to Ellingham: Approximately 5 miles of the A1 between Alnwick and Ellingham will also be upgraded to meet dual carriageway standards.
