Masdar, a UAE-government owned renewable energy company, will build a 100MW solar power plant in Turkmenistan, marking its foray into Central Asian country’s renewable energy space.
To this effect, Masdar has entered a joint development agreement with Turkmenenergo State Power Corporation of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan (Turkmenenergo).
The new solar power plant in Turkmenistan forms part of the country’s strategy to streamline its energy infrastructure and minimize its carbon emissions.
Charymurat Purchekov — Turkmenistan Cabinet of Ministers Deputy Chairman, said: “Today, we have signed a Joint Development Agreement for a 100 MW solar power project with the world-famous Masdar company of the United Arab Emirates.
“We hope that this document will mark the beginning of a new stage in the development of the electric power industry of Turkmenistan through the construction of solar and wind power plants, in which this company has accumulated a large and rich experience.
“We thank Masdar for entering such an important agreement with us and look forward to long-term cooperation.”
The agreement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Turkmenistan government and Masdar in October 2021 for the development of renewable energy projects in Turkmenistan on a public-private partnership basis.
Mohammed Jameel Al Ramahi — Masdar CEO said: “As a global leader in renewable energy with many projects across Central Asia, Masdar has the right expertise and experience needed to support Turkmenistan’s development of its renewable energy sector.
“We welcome the signing of the JDA and hope the 100 MWac project will be the first of many Masdar projects in Turkmenistan.”
The original MoU was signed in a ceremony held at the Leadership Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Last year, Masdar inaugurated the 100MW Nur Navoi Solar Project, which is the first utility-scale solar project in Uzbekistan.
Earlier this month, the Abu Dhabi-based company entered into an agreement with Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to develop renewable energy projects with a total capacity of up to 2GW.
In another development, Masdar announced its involvement in developing a 10GW wind project in Egypt.
