Tragedy strikes Manipur: Brave CRPF jawan falls in militant ambush, tensions escalate

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan, identified as 43-year-old Ajay Kumar Jha from Bihar, tragically lost his life in a suspected militant attack in Mongbung village, Jiribam district, Manipur, on Sunday morning. The attack also left a policeman injured, who is currently receiving medical treatment but is reported to be out of danger.

According to local police, the militants ambushed security forces, resulting in severe injuries for Ajay Kumar Jha, who suffered fatal bullet wounds to the head and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions in the area, with reports of gunshots heard the previous night as well.

Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, expressed his condemnation for the attack via a post on X, highlighting the gravity of the situation and extending condolences to the family of the deceased. “I strongly condemn the killing of a CRPF personnel in an attack carried out by an armed group, suspected to be Kuki militants, in Jiribam district today. His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty shall not go in vain,” Singh stated. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured policeman.

In response to the attack, additional security forces have been deployed to Mongbung from adjacent hill areas to strengthen security and prevent further incidents. The attack also resulted in damage to a vehicle used by security personnel.

Manipur has experienced ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May of the previous year, which has led to over 200 fatalities. This attack adds to the region’s significant security challenges, complicating efforts to restore peace and stability.
