Tata Power signs MoUs with Tamil Nadu for 10GW renewable energy projects
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (‘TPREL’), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has taken a monumental step in supporting the development of Tamil Nadu’s renewable energy landscape. The signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of Tamil Nadu underscores a joint effort to accelerate India’s clean energy transition.
Historic Collaboration for Renewable Energy Growth
The signing ceremony, held on January 8, 2024, at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai, witnessed key figures from the Government of Tamil Nadu, TPREL, and the Company. This alliance is expected to significantly enhance the renewable energy sector and establish Tamil Nadu as a pivotal hub for clean and sustainable energy.
Exploring Diverse Renewable Energy Opportunities
The first MoU outlines TPREL’s plan to develop 10,000 MW of diverse renewable energy power projects, including solar, wind, hybrid, RTC, peak, Firm, and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE), over the next five to seven years. These projects, spanning nearly 50,000 acres across Tamil Nadu, represent an investment potential of ₹70,000 crore. This initiative is poised to create approximately 3,000 green job opportunities, transforming local areas into employment hubs.
Expansion of Solar Cell and Module Production
The second MoU signifies an extension and enhancement of an existing agreement. TPREL aims to invest an additional ₹800 crore over the next two years to expand its 4 GW solar cell and module project in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli District. This expansion includes upgrading infrastructure and adding 300 MW each of cell and module line with the latest TOPCon technology, increasing the total plant capacity to 4.3GW.
Shared Vision for Economic and Environmental Sustainability
The investment by Tata Power Group aligns with the Tamil Nadu Government’s commitment to driving economic growth, employment, and environmental sustainability. By focusing on renewable and clean energy projects, TPREL is not only contributing to the state’s energy sector but also to the broader goals of sustainable development.
