In a transformative step towards green infrastructure in India’s aviation sector, Tata Power has entered a strategic partnership with Noida International Airport (NIA) to supply renewable energy. This collaboration, marked by two pivotal Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) signed in New Delhi, aims to meet NIA’s clean energy needs, underscoring both entities’ commitment to sustainable development.
Tata Power Secures Long-term Energy Commitment with NIA
Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. (TPTCL) will lead this partnership, managing a comprehensive renewable energy interface to ensure consistent green power for NIA. Under the agreements, TPTCL is set to deliver 10.8 MW of wind power, leveraging assets from Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL). Additionally, TPREL will install and maintain a 13 MW onsite solar capacity to power NIA’s overall operations sustainably.
Major Investment in Green Energy Infrastructure
With an estimated investment of ₹550 crore (~$66 million), Tata Power’s involvement extends beyond renewable energy supply. The agreement includes developing critical electrical infrastructure to support the airport’s operational resilience and efficiency. Tata Power’s Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services for these essential utilities will span 25 years, reinforcing the airport’s commitment to a smart, sustainable energy infrastructure.
A Green Blueprint for India’s Aviation Sector
This partnership signals a green model for India’s aviation industry, particularly as the nation anticipates constructing over 200 new airports within the next two decades. Tata Power’s CEO, Dr. Praveer Sinha, highlighted the project as a pioneering step in renewable energy integration for the nation’s aviation future. He emphasized the alignment with Tata Power’s larger mission to lead clean energy innovation, suggesting this project could serve as a sustainable blueprint for India’s expanding airport infrastructure.
NIA’s Vision for Sustainability
NIA CEO Christoph Schnellmann welcomed the partnership, recognizing it as a significant milestone in the airport’s sustainability journey. By securing over half of the airport’s energy needs from renewable sources, Schnellmann asserted that NIA aims to set a benchmark in eco-conscious airport operations. He pointed to the airport’s long-term vision of becoming a leading sustainable aviation hub.
The first phase of Noida International Airport, with an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually, will expand to serve 70 million passengers upon full completion. This partnership aligns with NIA’s ambition to establish itself as a Net Zero airport, setting a high standard for environmental responsibility in India’s aviation sector.
