Tata Motors and Tata Power join forces for 12MWp solar project in Pune
Tata Motors has partnered with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) to ink a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 12MWp on-site solar project at Tata Motors’ Pune commercial vehicle manufacturing facility. This collaboration aligns with the Tata Group’s vision for environmental sustainability and green manufacturing practices. The 12MWp solar project, which adds to Tata Motors’ existing 8.73MWp in Pune, is expected to be commissioned within six months after the PPA is signed.
Solar Project to Generate 17.5 Million Units of Electricity Annually
The new solar installation is anticipated to churn out 17.5 million units of electricity every year. This output will account for nearly 17.2% of Tata Motors’ annualized electricity requirements at its Pune facility. Additionally, the project is projected to reduce carbon emissions by over 12,400 tonnes/kWh per annum. The upcoming project will feature rooftop installations and plays a vital role in Tata Motors’ long-term sustainability goals.
VP of Tata Motors and CEO of Tata Power Comment on the Sustainable Venture
Vishal Badshah, Vice President of Commercial Vehicle Operations at Tata Motors, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability. “Tata Motors is committed to achieving net-zero emissions. This solar facility in Pune is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to transition to renewable energy sources,” he said. Ashish Khanna, CEO of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, mirrored this sentiment, stating that the 12MWp PPA is a critical step toward shared sustainability goals between Tata Power and Tata Motors.
Tata’s Prior Collaborations and Future Plans for Renewable Energy
This is not the first time Tata Motors and Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited have joined forces for renewable energy projects. They have previously collaborated on a 16MWp solar power initiative in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, which is slated to be the state’s largest in terms of capacity. Tata Motors plans to expand the solar capacity at its Pune plant in the coming years to meet the growing demand for renewable energy.
A Stepping Stone Towards a Greener Future for Tata Group
Tata Power is India’s largest integrated power company, present across the entire power value chain, including conventional and renewable energy. The 12MWp solar project is a noteworthy addition to Tata Motors’ total solar capacity, which now sums to 20.73MWp across its Commercial Vehicle Business Unit in Pune. With such strategic collaborations, both companies reaffirm their commitment to greener and more efficient operations, setting a benchmark in the industry for sustainability initiatives.
