Still Austin Whiskey introduces premium Tanager Cigar Blend Whiskey
Still Austin Whiskey Co., a trailblazer in Texas whiskey-making, has unveiled its most prestigious release to date—the Tanager Cigar Blend Whiskey. This offering, priced at $149, showcases the artistry and dedication of Austin’s first grain-to-glass distillery since Prohibition. Crafted using the ancient Petites Eaux technique, the whiskey stands as a testament to the company’s innovation and commitment to authentic, premium cigar blends.
Tanager Cigar Blend Whiskey represents a fusion of six-year-old high rye bourbon and pure Texas water, aged together at 50 proof for over a year. This intricate process, derived from French cognac traditions, enhances the depth and character of the whiskey, bringing caramelised wood sugars and a refined smoothness to every sip. Nancy Fraley, Master Blender at Still Austin, highlighted that the unique climate of Texas accelerates the aging process, allowing for exceptional results within just five years—an achievement celebrated in Texas whiskey-making.
A testament to grain-to-glass distilling
The Tanager Cigar Blend is crafted exclusively from locally sourced Texas ingredients, including red, white, and blue corn bourbon, rye, and malted barley. Unlike many whiskeys in the premium cigar blend category that rely on finishing barrels from sherry or rum, Tanager’s distinct flavour profile is drawn entirely from its core ingredients. This authenticity is rooted in Still Austin’s commitment to its grain-to-glass distillery model, which emphasises transparency and sustainability.
John Schrepel, Head Distiller at Still Austin, noted that the whiskey reflects the region’s unique terroir, showcasing bold and complex flavours that are unmistakably Texan. The company also prioritises sustainable practices, such as reducing carbon emissions, repurposing spent grains for animal feed, and implementing energy-efficient systems—further solidifying its leadership in Texas whiskey-making.
Artistry in every detail
Beyond its exceptional taste, Tanager Cigar Blend Whiskey is a visual masterpiece. Its packaging features a hand-painted design by Texas artist Marc Burckhardt, depicting the Summer Tanager bird amid a sunlit Texas landscape. The bird, a symbol of creativity and perseverance, is central to Still Austin’s brand identity and appears on all of its flagship bottles. This attention to detail underscores the artistry and craftsmanship that defines the company’s grain-to-glass distillery philosophy.
Chris Seals, Co-Founder and CEO of Still Austin Whiskey Co., described Tanager as a fearless expression of patience and skill, embodying the heart of Texas whiskey-making. Every bottle tells a story of dedication to local ingredients, artistry, and a commitment to creating premium cigar blends that stand out in the competitive whiskey market.
