Aramco, a global leader in integrated energy and chemicals, has marked a significant achievement by producing the first unconventional tight gas from the South Ghawar Tight Gas Project two months ahead of schedule. This development is a key part of Aramco’s strategic plan to increase its gas production by over 50% from 2021 levels by 2030, in line with domestic demand.
South Ghawar’s Enhanced Gas Processing Capacities
The newly commissioned facilities at the South Ghawar Tight Gas Project boast a capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day (scfd) of raw gas processing and 38,000 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate processing. In response to the rising demand for gas, Aramco is committed to more than doubling the overall processing capacity to meet South Ghawar’s strategic goal of delivering 750 million scfd of raw gas shortly.
Leadership’s Vision for Energy and Chemicals Sector
Nasir Al-Naimi, Aramco’s Upstream President, emphasized the significance of this milestone. “This first production of unconventional tight gas from South Ghawar is a milestone that demonstrates real progress on our gas expansion strategy,” he said. Al-Naimi highlighted the project’s role in meeting Saudi Arabia’s need for lower-emission energy and supporting growth in the chemicals sector, praising the team’s ability to commence production ahead of schedule and under budget.
Aramco’s Progress in Unconventional Gas Streams
The successful production of tight sand gas at the South Ghawar Tight Gas Project is Aramco’s second unconventional gas stream, following the commencement of production at the North Arabia field in 2018. Additionally, Aramco is making strides in developing the Jafurah unconventional gas field, the largest liquid-rich shale gas play in the Middle East.
Aramco’s early success in the South Ghawar Tight Gas Project reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable energy production and its role in shaping the future of the energy and chemicals sectors in Saudi Arabia and globally.
