Sigma Lithium secures triple environmental license for Barreiro mine in Brazil
Sigma Lithium Corporation, a leader in sustainable lithium production for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, has achieved a significant milestone with the unanimous approval of a Triple Environmental License for its Barreiro mine. This landmark approval, granted by the Chamber of Mining Activities in Minas Gerais, Brazil, underscores the company’s commitment to environmentally responsible operations while securing the long-term supply of high-quality lithium for its Greentech Industrial Complex.
The Triple Environmental License (Licença Operacional, Licença Prévia, and Licença Instalação) permits construction, installation, and operational activities at the Barreiro mine, part of Sigma’s wholly owned Grota do Cirilo property. This regulatory achievement strengthens Sigma’s position as a global leader in sustainable lithium mining and ensures an uninterrupted supply of spodumene ore feedstock over the 16-year term of financing from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).
A Pioneering Approach to Sustainable Mining
Sigma Lithium has long been recognized for its forward-thinking approach to integrating sustainability into its mining operations. The Barreiro mine’s licensing process began in January 2021 with environmental assessment studies, followed by the official application submission in July 2022. The company’s strategic foresight included early community engagement and substantial investments in local infrastructure, well before mining activities were necessary.
In collaboration with the municipalities of Aracuai and Itinga, Sigma Lithium invested in the construction of schools and childcare centers, demonstrating a commitment to social sustainability. Two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were also engaged to offer educational and cultural activities for children in the region, further solidifying the company’s reputation as a socially responsible corporate entity.
The unanimous approval of the license reflects this extensive groundwork, with NGO representatives and regulatory authorities endorsing Sigma’s vision for a sustainable mining future.
Ensuring Long-Term Lithium Supply for Greentech Operations
The Barreiro mine will support Sigma’s Greentech Industrial Complex, which produces Quintuple Zero Green Lithium—chemical-grade lithium concentrate manufactured with zero-carbon energy, zero potable water usage, zero toxic chemicals, and zero tailings dams. This cutting-edge production process is integral to Sigma’s commitment to providing carbon-neutral lithium for EV batteries, a cornerstone of global decarbonization efforts.
Although current operations at the Grota do Cirilo property do not immediately require mining at Barreiro, the license positions Sigma Lithium for future growth. By securing regulatory approval in advance, Sigma ensures operational continuity, bolstering its ability to meet increasing demand for sustainable lithium in the EV sector.
Phase 1 Success and Capacity Expansion
Sigma’s Grota do Cirilo property began commercial production in the second quarter of 2023, delivering lithium concentrate to global markets. Phase 1 operations have demonstrated the feasibility of the company’s innovative Greentech plant, which operates with zero reliance on traditional high-impact mining practices.
Looking ahead, Sigma Lithium has approved the construction of Phase 2, which will double production capacity to 520,000 tonnes per year. This expansion aligns with Sigma’s strategic objective to remain a key supplier in the EV battery supply chain while adhering to the highest environmental standards.
Industry Leadership in Sustainability
Sigma Lithium’s success is a testament to its pioneering efforts in combining sustainable mining practices with cutting-edge technology. The Triple Environmental License not only secures the future of its operations but also sets a benchmark for the mining industry.
The company’s CEO, Ana Cabral, expressed gratitude to the state of Minas Gerais for its confidence in Sigma’s vision, emphasizing the importance of proactive community engagement and environmental stewardship. Cabral stated that the license approval underscores Sigma’s unwavering dedication to aligning its mining activities with global sustainability goals.
The Road Ahead for Sigma Lithium
With the Barreiro mine now licensed for construction and operation, Sigma is well-positioned to meet the rising demand for green lithium in the EV industry. The approval is not just a regulatory milestone but a reflection of Sigma’s ability to integrate community, environmental, and industrial objectives seamlessly.
Sigma’s continued focus on sustainable practices ensures that it remains at the forefront of the EV battery materials supply chain, contributing to the global transition toward a low-carbon economy.
