SAP introduces sovereign cloud capabilities in UK, targeting public sector and critical industries
SAP SE has officially launched its Sovereign Cloud capabilities in the United Kingdom, delivering highly secure, localised cloud solutions aimed at public sector organisations, critical national infrastructure, and heavily regulated industries. This development reinforces SAP’s commitment to advancing data sovereignty and compliance in the UK, aligning with the nation’s stringent data protection and cybersecurity standards.
Major step in UK digital transformation
Building on SAP’s initial €250 million investment in the UK, the Sovereign Cloud initiative marks a significant milestone in its broader strategy to drive innovation and support digital transformation within the country. The offering is now operational and fully compliant with the UK’s Data Protection Act 2018, the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) security guidelines, and Cyber Essential Plus standards.
The Sovereign Cloud launch underscores the growing demand for secure data solutions as businesses and governments worldwide emphasise data sovereignty amid escalating security risks. This aligns with SAP’s broader global strategy, highlighted by the establishment of its Sovereign Services & Delivery organisation in October 2024, consolidating its expertise in operating sovereign cloud solutions.
Tailored for regulated sectors
SAP’s Sovereign Cloud is tailored to meet the complex needs of industries requiring strict data residency, security, and compliance standards. It specifically caters to sectors such as aerospace and defence, central government, the Ministry of Defence, and energy and natural resources. The solution portfolio includes SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud Edition, SAP SuccessFactors HCM, SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Analytics Cloud, Fieldglass, and Digital Supply Chain tools like Integrated Business Planning (IBP).
These tools provide a secure and robust foundation for managing sensitive data and critical operations, empowering organisations to innovate while adhering to UK regulations.
Leadership emphasises security and compliance
Martin Merz, President of Sovereign Services & Delivery at SAP, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to data security and sovereignty, citing more than two decades of experience in operating sovereign cloud solutions. He expressed pride in the UK Sovereign Cloud launch, noting its potential to transform how governments and businesses harness cloud technology.
Leila Romane, Managing Director of SAP UK & Ireland, highlighted the importance of sovereignty in safeguarding against unauthorised data access and ensuring regulatory compliance. She emphasised that all services are managed by security-cleared personnel in dedicated UK-based facilities, providing customers with the confidence to innovate and mitigate risks.
Expanding capabilities
SAP plans to expand the UK Sovereign Cloud’s capabilities, introducing additional services and solutions to meet evolving customer needs. The initiative is part of SAP’s broader commitment to investing in cutting-edge infrastructure, local talent, and opportunities that drive growth and digital transformation across the nation.
SAP’s Sovereign Cloud is positioned as a critical enabler for organisations navigating complex regulatory environments, ensuring resilience, security, and compliance in an increasingly digitalised world.
