In an interview with The Statesman last month, Pitroda made remarks about the ethnic diversity of India, suggesting, “We could hold together a country as diverse as India — where people on the East look like Chinese, people on the West look like Arabs, people on the North look like maybe Whites and people in South India look like Africans. It doesn’t matter. We are all brothers and sisters.” His comments were intended to celebrate the country’s unity despite diversity but were met with sharp criticism from various political quarters, including several leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The remarks were deemed offensive by many, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who labeled them as “shameful” and indicative of Congress’s alleged misconceptions about regional appearances and identities in India. “Can a country accept such things?” Modi questioned, highlighting the sensitive nature of regional identities in India’s political discourse. The controversy led to Pitroda’s resignation, which was publicly announced by Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh on the social media platform X.

Despite the resignation, the AICC has decided to reinstate Pitroda, recognizing his long-standing contributions to the party and its international outreach efforts. The reappointment is effective immediately, signaling a move towards reconciliation and focusing on the broader goals of the party.
