Saluda Hydro power plant : GE Vernova bags modernization contract from Dominion Energy
GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) is partnering with Dominion Energy South Carolina for a transformative modernization project at the historic Saluda Hydro power plant. Located on the Saluda River near Columbia, South Carolina, the plant has been a cornerstone of renewable energy since 1930. The modernization of the Saluda Hydro power plant builds on a long-standing partnership between GE Vernova and Dominion Energy. The Saluda Hydro power plant, with its five Francis turbines, has provided reliable, renewable energy for nearly a century. Initially constructed to support Columbia’s textile industry, the plant now serves as a vital energy provider and community resource. Lake Murray, the 48,000-acre reservoir created by the dam, remains a recreational hub for South Carolina residents.
The modernization project targets Units 1 and 3, which will be upgraded with GE Vernova’s patented aerating turbine technology. This innovative solution improves water quality by increasing dissolved oxygen levels, ensuring the health of the Saluda River ecosystem. In addition to turbine upgrades, Unit 3’s generator will be rehabilitated, ensuring the facility’s continued reliability.
