Saipem wins $4bn offshore EPC contract from QatarEnergy LNG for North Field production project

TAGS

Saipem, a leading engineering and construction company, has been awarded a substantial offshore Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract by QatarEnergy LNG, valued at approximately 4 billion USD. The contract is for the Combined COMP3A & COMP3B of the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Programme, aimed at sustaining the production capacity of the North Field offshore natural gas reservoir, located off the north-east coast of Qatar.

The contract marks a significant milestone for Saipem as it expands its portfolio in the Middle East, particularly in Qatar’s energy sector. The North Field is one of the world’s largest natural gas reservoirs, and this project is critical to maintaining its production levels.

Key Elements of the Contract

Under this contract, Saipem will undertake the comprehensive engineering, procurement, fabrication, and installation of six offshore platforms. The scope of work also includes laying approximately 100 kilometres of corrosion-resistant alloy rigid subsea pipelines with diameters of 28 inches and 24 inches. Additionally, Saipem will be responsible for installing 100 kilometres of subsea composite cables and 150 kilometres of fibre optic cables, along with several other subsea facilities critical to the project’s success.

This new contract builds on the existing relationship between Saipem and QatarEnergy LNG. It follows the EPC package awarded to Saipem in October 2022 for the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Complexes Project [COMP 2], which is currently underway. The awarding of this latest contract is a testament to Saipem’s expertise and track record in offshore projects, particularly in Qatar, where the company has been solidifying its presence over the years.

Strategic Importance of the Project

The Combined COMP3A & COMP3B Offshore Compression Programme is designed to enhance the sustainability of natural gas production from the North Field, ensuring that Qatar continues to meet global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The project is part of a broader strategy by QatarEnergy LNG to optimise and sustain production levels in one of the world’s most significant natural gas fields.

This contract not only reinforces Saipem’s position as a major player in the oil and gas sector in Qatar but also highlights its technical capabilities in executing complex offshore EPC projects. The successful implementation of this project could open up further opportunities for Saipem in the region, considering the ongoing expansions and development activities in Qatar’s energy sector.

A Boost to Saipem’s Portfolio in Qatar

Saipem’s continued involvement in the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Programme signifies its strategic alignment with Qatar’s long-term energy goals. As one of the top global contractors for offshore projects, Saipem’s expertise in delivering large-scale, complex projects positions it well to contribute to Qatar’s ambitious plans to remain a leading LNG exporter.
