RWE advances renewable energy in Germany with 57MW onshore wind farms
RWE, a leading player in renewable energy, has been awarded two significant projects in the latest auction by the Federal Network Agency for onshore wind farms in Germany. These projects will see the development of new wind farms in North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein, which will break ground in 2024. By 2025, the ten wind turbines from these projects are expected to generate sufficient green electricity to power approximately 42,000 households.
CEO Katja Wünschel Comments on RWE’s Renewable Initiatives
Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, expressed her delight in laying further foundations for Germany’s energy transition with the new wind farms. She praised the development team and the authorities for their promptness in approving the projects, highlighting the potential for faster approval procedures to become the norm.
Aldenhoven Wind Farm: Powering the Future
The Aldenhoven wind farm, located in the Rhenish mining area, will be constructed on recultivated land from the Inden open-cast mine. With six wind turbines producing a total output of 34.2 megawatts (MW), this farm will supply green electricity to around 24,000 households annually post-commissioning in 2025. Construction work for the necessary infrastructure is set to begin as early as the first quarter of 2024.
Lasbek Wind Farm: A Repowering Project in Northern Germany
RWE’s repowering project at Lasbek wind farm, near Hamburg, involves replacing six existing turbines with four more powerful units. This project aims to enhance the farm’s capacity to 22.8 MW, enabling it to generate green electricity for about 18,000 households. The new construction is scheduled for winter 2024/2025, with the old turbines remaining operational until then.
RWE’s Investment in Renewable Energies
RWE currently operates around 90 onshore wind farms in Germany and plans to invest approximately €11 billion in green generation capacities over the next seven years. The company is actively seeking sites throughout Germany to further expand renewable energies, demonstrating its commitment to the energy transition.
