Reliance Power makes history with landmark renewable energy project
Reliance Power Limited, through its subsidiary Reliance NU Suntech Private Limited, has won India’s largest solar energy project coupled with a 1,860 MWh battery storage system. This project, awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) through an e-reverse auction on 9 December 2024, represents a major milestone in advancing renewable energy solutions in the country.
This 930 MW solar energy project includes a minimum battery storage capacity of 465 MW/1,860 MWh, which will be fully charged by solar power. As part of the tender, Reliance NU Suntech has committed to a competitive tariff of ₹3.53 ($0.0416) per kWh, showcasing the cost-efficiency of solar energy paired with advanced storage technology.
Driving India’s Renewable Energy Goals
The integration of battery storage systems with solar power highlights India’s growing capacity to deploy large-scale renewable energy solutions. The project ensures a four-hour daily peak power supply, addressing critical demands for grid stability and reliability. This innovative model demonstrates how solar power, when paired with robust energy storage, can transform into a consistent and sustainable energy source.
Reliance NU Suntech’s allocation in SECI’s Tranche XVII auction represents the largest single award among five contenders vying for a total 2,000 MW capacity. This reflects the company’s leadership in implementing cutting-edge renewable energy solutions and reinforces India’s transition to a greener economy.
Technological Advancement in Battery Storage Systems
The success of this solar energy project underlines India’s capability to combine solar power with advanced battery storage systems to create scalable renewable energy models. The project will be built, owned, and operated by Reliance NU Suntech, adhering to Central Electricity Regulatory Commission standards for integration with the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS).
The four-hour discharge capability ensures uninterrupted peak power supply, meeting the needs of distribution companies (discoms) under a 25-year power purchase agreement. With solar power becoming more economical, this project positions Reliance NU Suntech as a key player in developing cost-effective renewable energy solutions.
Reliance Power’s Renewable Energy Vision
Reliance Power Limited has a legacy of large-scale power generation, with a portfolio that includes the world’s largest integrated coal-based power plant. With this pivot toward clean energy, Reliance Power strengthens its role in India’s renewable energy transition. The solar energy project and its associated battery storage system exemplify the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
By achieving this milestone, Reliance NU Suntech not only secures a prominent position in India’s solar sector but also sets a benchmark for future large-scale renewable energy solutions. This initiative signals a promising path toward energy independence and environmental responsibility.
