Reliance Power makes history with landmark renewable energy project

Reliance Power Limited, through its subsidiary Reliance NU Suntech Private Limited, has won India’s largest solar energy project coupled with a 1,860 MWh battery storage system. This project, awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) through an e-reverse auction on 9 December 2024, represents a major milestone in advancing renewable energy solutions in the country.

This 930 MW solar energy project includes a minimum battery storage capacity of 465 MW/1,860 MWh, which will be fully charged by solar power. As part of the tender, Reliance NU Suntech has committed to a competitive tariff of ₹3.53 ($0.0416) per kWh, showcasing the cost-efficiency of solar energy paired with advanced storage technology.

The integration of battery storage systems with solar power highlights India’s growing capacity to deploy large-scale renewable energy solutions. The project ensures a four-hour daily peak power supply, addressing critical demands for grid stability and reliability. Reliance NU Suntech’s allocation in SECI’s Tranche XVII auction represents the largest single award among five contenders vying for a total 2,000 MW capacity. The four-hour discharge capability ensures uninterrupted peak power supply, meeting the needs of distribution companies (discoms) under a 25-year power purchase agreement.
