The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe weather warnings for multiple regions across India, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for Tuesday, July 16. Key coastal areas in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Konkan Goa are bracing for substantial rain, with certain districts under red and orange alerts due to the intensity of the expected downpours.
Red and Orange Alerts Detailed
The IMD has placed Raigad under a red alert and has issued orange alerts for other major districts in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur. In Kerala, red alerts are active for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod, with additional orange alerts for districts such as Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
Local Impacts and Displacement
In Thane, the overflowing Kamwari River has led to flooding in coastal areas, displacing dozens from their homes in the Sultania Gali area. The severe weather has also caused extensive damage in Karnataka, with the south interior and coastal regions submerged and widespread disruptions due to uprooted trees and electric poles, particularly noted in Kodagu district.
Weather Shifts and Predictions
Dr. Naresh Kumar, a scientist with the IMD, explained the current weather conditions, stating, “The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi.”
In Delhi NCR, light to moderate rains are predicted to continue for the next six days, which could lead to traffic congestions and commuting challenges.
Nationwide Impact
The recent weather patterns have led to significant disruptions across India, with ongoing heavy rains causing floods that have resulted in the loss of lives and damage to property over the last several days.
The ongoing monsoon season is exhibiting significant intensity this year, leading to frequent severe weather alerts. Residents in affected areas are urged to follow safety instructions and stay informed through official weather updates.
