Rahul Gandhi returns to Wayanad post Supreme Court stay on conviction
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is making his anticipated return to his parliamentary seat in Kerala’s Wayanad, marking his first visit after his Lok Sabha MP status was reinstated. This development follows closely on the heels of the Supreme Court’s decision on August 4 to stay his conviction concerning the controversial ‘Modi surname’ remark. The Lok Sabha Secretariat confirmed on Monday the restoration of Gandhi’s membership.
VT Siddique, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee Working President, detailed Rahul Gandhi’s itinerary for his visit to Wayanad, stating, “Rahul Gandhi will be in Wayanad on August 12 and 13. We have begun preparations to ensure a grand reception for him. Furthermore, he is set to attend a district Congress Committee meeting during his visit.” Siddique also highlighted the significance of this visit, predicting that it would be “the warmest welcome ever in the history of Wayanad for Rahul Gandhi.”
In other related developments, the Congress leader has reportedly been reassigned the 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow, which stands as a testament to his reinstated position. Sources from the party revealed that “Rahul Gandhi has received an official confirmation from the Estate office for the allotment of the bungalow, as is customary for an MP in Delhi.”
To provide context, Rahul Gandhi faced disqualification from the lower house on March 24 due to his conviction and subsequent two-year jail sentence concerning the ‘Modi surname’ comments. Following the conviction, he moved to the 10 Janpath Road residence, the domicile of the former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, after vacating the bungalow post the Surat Session’s Court decision on April 20.
With these events unfolding, the political atmosphere in Wayanad is charged with anticipation as it prepares to welcome back its Lok Sabha representative.
