The company’s newly developed PLA facility is set to produce 100 tons of lactic acid per annum, 60 tons of lactide, and 55 tons of PLA. Spread over three acres, the facility integrates fermentation, chemical synthesis, and purification, highlighting Praj’s expertise in industrial-scale biopolymer production.

“This demonstrates India’s strong lead in technological innovation,” Dr. Jitendra Singh noted during the inauguration. He emphasized how this facility contributes to India’s initiatives like “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make-in-India,” making the country self-reliant in biomanufacturing capabilities.

From Biofuels to Bioplastics: A Strategic Diversification

Praj Industries has successfully leveraged its extensive experience in biofuels to expand into renewable chemicals and bioplastics. The company’s Bio-Prism® portfolio aims to deliver a broad spectrum of solutions under renewable chemicals and materials (RCM). PLA is the first biopolymer in this portfolio to achieve large-scale demonstration, signifying a crucial step in developing India’s bioeconomy.

According to a recent report by the United Nations titled “Chemicals in Plastics, 2023,” conventional plastics pose significant health risks. Additionally, single-use plastics (SUPs) have had a disastrous effect on aquatic ecosystems, suffocating marine life and adding millions of tons of waste to oceans.

With this new facility, Praj aims to replace harmful plastics with bio-based, biodegradable PLA. These bioplastics are made from natural monomers and contain safer additives, making them ideal for a range of applications, including food packaging, personal care, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Ashish Lele, Director of the National Chemical Laboratory, emphasized the scale of the plastic crisis in India, noting that “India produces 25 million tons of plastic annually, of which only 3.4 million tons are collected for recycling. It is imperative to transition towards biodegradable and compostable bioplastics to address this alarming issue.” He also pointed out the importance of collaboration between industry, academia, and government to ensure these solutions are both scalable and impactful.
