PM Modi matches Tricolour hoisting record at Red Fort on 77th Independence Day
In a significant moment marking the 77th Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the national Tricolour at the historic Red Fort. This act establishes him as the first non-Congress Prime Minister to raise the national flag from the iconic site for a record 10th time, drawing parallels with the tenures of former PM Manmohan Singh. With this ceremonial hoisting, PM Modi stands shoulder to shoulder with Singh, both marking a decade of this august tradition.
The annals of Indian history have witnessed only Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi, surpassing this record, with both leaders having the distinction of hoisting the Tricolour more than ten times at the revered Red Fort.
From the dawn of independence in 1947, when Nehru became the pioneer Prime Minister to embrace this emblematic ritual, India has seen 15 prime ministers helm its leadership. Of these distinguished leaders, 13 have had the honor of replicating this patriotic act at the Red Fort. However, amidst this elite list, Gulzarilal Nanda and Chandra Sekhar stand out as the two Prime Ministers who missed out on this esteemed tradition.
