The Lower Congo Basin has witnessed a resurgence in exploration activity, characterized by numerous substantial discoveries and rapid development. This revival is attributed to a strategic review of past drilling results and hydrocarbon-charged reservoirs, particularly in the Lower Miocene and Oligocene post-salt plays. This analysis has unveiled potential overlooked hydrocarbon shows in the younger stratigraphy.

Uncovering Block 16’s Hidden Gems

Block 16, which has been relatively dormant in terms of exploration since the early 2010s, is now under the spotlight. The most recent exploration well in this block was drilled in 2013. The earlier Bengo (1994) and Longa (1995) Upper Miocene discoveries in the northern part of Block 16 were the only known oil and gas finds until a recent re-evaluation. This re-evaluation has revealed that oil was also recovered from Upper Miocene reservoirs in the southern part of the survey area, indicating broader exploration prospects.

Innovative Reprocessing Techniques

PGS, in collaboration with its partners, including Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG), is employing modern depth imaging techniques for the reprocessing. These techniques are similar to those used in the neighboring Block 1/14 GeoStreamer MC3D survey, which yielded a more detailed view of the deeper post-salt section. The proximity of hydrocarbon accumulations in older reservoirs, along with evidence of oil charge to Upper Miocene units, offers promising indications for future exploration successes from the reprocessed ANG Block 16 dataset.
