Nokia has successfully deployed a private 4.9G/LTE wireless network for and Stevedoring, a key terminal operator at the US in Washington. The new secure and low-latency network aims to help Husky Terminal modernize its marine freight operations through innovative digital technologies.

Transforming Terminal Operations Through Cloud-Based Systems

The private wireless network facilitates Husky Terminal’s migration to a cloud-based terminal operating system (TOS). Enabled by ‘s Digital Automation Cloud (DAC), the network has substantially enhanced the terminal’s operational efficiency by eradicating previous issues of reliability and capacity experienced with traditional Wi-Fi. Philip Styf, Director of IT at Husky Terminal, said: “The deployment of Nokia private LTE was a significant milestone for us at the Port of Tacoma and has exceeded our expectations. With reliability no longer a concern, we’ve moved from firefighting mode to focusing on the strategic use cases that will further enhance operations for our customers as well as our teams working at the port.”

Enhanced Connectivity With Reduced Hardware

The wireless network covers Husky Terminal’s 115+ acre container yard using just six 4.9G/LTE antennas at four access point locations, requiring 91% less hardware compared to the 39 Wi-Fi access points needed previously. This results in reduced operational costs and lesser fiber requirement at the site. Now, over 40 yard trucks are connected, providing better coordination and monitoring to support worker activities.
