NLC India launches 300MW solar power project in Rajasthan, backed by PM Modi

NLC India Limited, a dominant force in the mining and power generation sector, marked a historic milestone with the foundation stone laying ceremony of its 300 MW Solar Power Project in Barsingsar, Rajasthan. The event, graced by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi through video conference, signifies a major step forward in India’s renewable energy journey, underpinned by the presence of notable dignitaries including Shri Bhajan Lal Shanna, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and other key government officials.

This landmark project, initiated under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) Scheme and awarded by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) on October 4, 2021, underscores a significant stride towards enhancing India’s renewable energy portfolio and fostering sustainable development. With an estimated project cost of Rs. 1,756 crore and a target commissioning date in September 2024, NLC India Ltd demonstrates its unwavering commitment to contributing to national priorities within the stipulated timelines.

In his address, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi highlighted the nation’s accelerated efforts in solar power generation, noting, “India has started moving at a fast pace in generating solar power, and in giving an impetus to this mission, today, foundation stone has been laid for various solar power projects in Rajasthan.” The project is expected not only to supply green and cost-effective power to the region but also to open substantial employment opportunities for the youth.

The 300MW NLC Barsingsar Solar Power Project, strategically located near the existing Barsingsar Thermal Power Station, is set to leverage advantages in power evacuation and utilization of common infrastructure facilities. It embodies the spirit of the ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ initiative, employing indigenous high-efficiency bifacial solar modules and anticipating the generation of approximately 18.75 BU of green energy over its 25-year lifespan, significantly contributing to environmental sustainability by reducing around 18 Million Metric Tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

This venture is expected to create employment for nearly 600 personnel during the construction phase and over 100 individuals during its operational and maintenance phase, fostering economic growth and skill development in the region. Awarded to Tata Solar Power Systems Ltd on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis, the project promises the highest standards of quality and efficiency, leveraging the latest technology in high-efficiency bifacial modules.

The green power generated by this project will assist the State of Rajasthan in meeting its Renewable Purchase Obligation and propel India towards achieving its Net Zero status, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. The foundation stone laying ceremony, supported by the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and key ministers, sets a precedent for renewable energy projects in India, highlighting NLC India Limited’s role in the nation’s sustainable development narrative.
