Nightmare in Ukraine: Russian assault targets 15 regions, civilian infrastructure hit
In a large-scale and deadly escalation, Russia launched an unprecedented aerial assault across Ukraine on Monday, unleashing a wave of drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles that targeted at least 15 regions, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack, described by many as a “nightmare,” has been one of the most extensive and devastating since the beginning of the conflict in 2022.
Russia’s Widespread Attack Hits Civilian and Critical Infrastructure
The Ukrainian government reported that the assault, which lasted over eight hours, involved the deployment of 127 missiles and 109 drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as “dastardly,” highlighting that Russia’s attack primarily targeted civilian infrastructure, including vital sectors such as energy and railroads.
“What is happening now in Kyiv is an unbelievable horror. Pray for us,” Kira Rudick, a Ukrainian Parliament member, stated on social media, labeling the attack as a “nightmare.”
High Casualty Toll and Widespread Damage
The Ukrainian State Emergency Service confirmed that at least seven people were killed and 47 others injured, including four children. The strikes wreaked havoc across the country, leading to blackouts in multiple regions such as Kyiv, Odesa, and Chernihiv. A missile strike on civilian infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih resulted in one woman’s death and injuries to four others, as rescue operations continued late into the night.
International Condemnation and U.S. Support
In response to the attacks, U.S. President Joe Biden strongly condemned Russia’s actions, vowing to bolster Ukraine’s energy resilience by surging energy equipment to help repair its damaged grid. “Russia will never succeed in Ukraine, and the spirit of the Ukrainian people will never be broken,” Biden asserted in his statement.
The White House echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategy of targeting energy infrastructure is a “classic play,” aiming to terrorize Ukrainians as winter approaches. National Security communications adviser John Kirby reiterated the U.S.’s condemnation of the assault, labeling it as part of Russia’s continued war against Ukraine.
Russia’s Justification and Ongoing Tensions
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for the “massive strike,” stating that long-range precision weapons, including sea-launched drones, were used to target critical energy infrastructure that allegedly supported Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. The ministry declared that “all designated targets were hit.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to grapple with the aftermath of the strikes, with widespread power outages disrupting daily life and public services across the nation. Despite the destruction, Ukrainian engineers and emergency services are working tirelessly to restore power and assist those affected.
The Human Cost of War
The latest assault serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, with civilian lives continuously endangered by the conflict. As the war shows no signs of abating, the international community remains deeply concerned about the escalating violence and its devastating impact on the Ukrainian populace.
