NAHEMA and NHIndustries secure €600m contract for NH90 helicopter’s SWR3
In a landmark move, the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA) and NHIndustries (NHI) have finalized a significant contract exceeding €600 million, aimed at advancing the operational efficiency and lifespan of the NH90 helicopter fleet. This deal marks a pivotal advancement with the introduction of Software Release 3 (SWR3), set to enhance the fleet’s functionality extensively.
Enhanced Features and Strategic Upgrades
The SWR3 configuration brings substantial updates to the current NH90 helicopters, incorporating cutting-edge technologies such as the first airborne Data Link 22 on a helicopter, a next-generation high definition Electro-Optical system (LEOSS-T), and the advanced Sonar OTS-90 Mark II. These upgrades are designed to bolster the NH90’s maritime and combat capabilities, ensuring it remains at the forefront of military aviation technology.
Extending NH90’s Operational Capabilities
The NH90 naval version, specifically, will see remarkable enhancements. The inclusion of Data Link 22 enables secure communication without reliance on satellites, providing unmatched data exchange capabilities. This system ensures the NH90 stands ready for modern and future multi-domain operational scenarios. Furthermore, the integration of high-definition technologies will amplify its maritime mission effectiveness, particularly in long-range surveillance and target tracking, significantly reducing crew workload and elevating mission success rates during complex operations like Maritime Security Operations (MSO) and Search And Rescue (SAR).
Development and Deployment Phases
The agreement encompasses an initial development and qualification phase with extensive flight testing scheduled in Tessera, Italy, focusing on both the Italian Navy and Army variants. A subsequent phase, still under discussion, will aim to retrofit SWR3 across over 200 NH90 helicopters, spanning naval (NFH) and terrestrial (TTH) variants across Belgium, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands.
