In a significant development, Mihir Shah, the son of Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, was arrested near Mumbai in connection with a hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to her husband. The arrest occurred in Virar, just two days after the tragic incident, ending a brief period during which Shah evaded police custody.
The accident occurred early on Sunday morning in the Worli area of south-central Mumbai. Mihir Shah, driving a BMW, allegedly struck a two-wheeler from behind. The impact killed 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa, who was riding pillion, and injured her husband, Pradeep Nakhwa. Shockingly, after the collision, the BMW, driven at high speed, dragged Kaveri Nakhwa’s body for approximately 1.5 km. In a desperate attempt to avoid capture, Mihir Shah switched places with his driver, Rajrushi Bidawat, before fleeing the scene in a different vehicle.
After the accident, Mihir Shah fled to a friend’s house in suburban Goregaon using an auto rickshaw, leaving his car and driver behind. His sister later picked him up, and the Shah family, along with two friends, temporarily relocated to a resort in Shahapur, Thane district, to avoid police detection. Their attempt to remain undetected failed when Mumbai Police tracked the cell phone of one of Shah’s friends, who had briefly turned on his mobile phone. This crucial slip allowed the police to pinpoint their location and proceed with the arrest.
The Mumbai Police acted swiftly following the incident, piecing together Mihir Shah’s movements and coordinating with various sources to locate and arrest him. The community has expressed a strong desire for justice, particularly because the accused is the son of a prominent political figure, which often complicates legal proceedings due to potential influences.
This case has sparked widespread discussion on road safety and the accountability of individuals from influential backgrounds. Mumbai, known for its bustling traffic and high incidence of road accidents, has seen public calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and quicker judicial processes, especially in cases involving fatalities.
As the legal proceedings unfold, all eyes will be on how the justice system handles the case of Mihir Shah. The incident not only highlights critical issues of road safety and law enforcement in Mumbai but also tests the integrity of legal proceedings involving politically connected individuals. The public and the victims’ family await thorough investigation and fair adjudication to bring about justice for Kaveri Nakhwa.
