Mitsubishi Power to deliver JAC Gas Turbine Power Island for Plant Barry
Southern Company’s Alabama Power has chosen a Mitsubishi Power JAC power island for a new 720MW combined cycle unit at its James M. Barry Electric Generating Plant (Plant Barry) in Alabama.
Plant Barry, which is located in Mobile County, is a coal- and natural gas-fired electrical generation facility that has been operating since 1954.
The new unit for the power plant features a JAC gas turbine, a steam turbine, and also a heat recovery steam generator. The turnkey solution will be installed at the power plant by Mitsubishi Power in consortium with Black & Veatch.
According to Mitsubishi Power, its JAC gas turbine power island can deliver efficiency greater than 64%. The power island is also claimed to have 99.5% reliability.
Construction on the new combined cycle unit is expected to create over 300 jobs and about 30 permanent jobs when it begins commercial operation.
Jim Heilbron – Alabama Power senior vice president and senior production officer said: “The Mitsubishi Power JAC gas turbine’s proven performance and cost-effective operation fit our mission of providing our customers with safe, clean, reliable and affordable power, when they need it.”
Black & Veatch, on its part, will provide an integrated engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) solution.
Paul Browning – President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas said: “Our mission at Mitsubishi Power is to provide total solutions to our customers.
“We’re working with Black & Veatch to support Alabama Power’s mission to meet the needs of its customers and support the economy in the Mobile area and across Alabama. Together with Alabama Power and Black & Veatch, we are creating a Change in Power.”
