Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric will construct a new room air conditioners (A/C) and compressors plant in Tamil Nadu, India, to expand its A/C and refrigeration businesses.
The JPY 26.7 billion ($222.5 million) plant will initially manufacture 300,000 room air conditioner outdoor units and 650,000 compressors per year.
The new 88,000 square-meter A/C and compressors plant in Tamil Nadu is anticipated to commence production in October 2025 and help Mitsubishi Electric meet increasing demand to replace older air conditioning and refrigeration systems with newer models in India.
The Indian facility forms part of Mitsubishi Electric’s Advance & Innovation 2025 strategy to sell JPY 1.26 trillion ($10.5 billion) worth air conditioning and refrigeration systems and achieve an operating profit of 12% by the fiscal year ending March 2026.
The facility, which will be built on a 210,000 square-meter site, will minimize carbon emissions through improved thermal insulation and use of highly efficient air conditioning and heated-water systems, and LED lighting.
The Mitsubishi Electric A/C and compressors plant will help the company meet its sustainable development goals with the reuse of wastewater through underground filtration treatment and site greening.
Over a five-year period ending in March 2026, Mitsubishi Electric expects to invest approximately JPY 180 billion (around $1.5 billion) in related plants across the world, including the US and Europe.
In 2010, Mitsubishi Electric established Mitsubishi Electric India to support its air conditioning and refrigeration systems business in the country.
