Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders advances naval defence with fast and offshore patrol vessels
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a distinguished Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU), has achieved a significant milestone in India‘s naval defence projects. The company initiated the production of the first Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) alongside the second Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), showcasing its commitment to bolstering India’s maritime capabilities.
The plate cutting ceremonies for these vessels, held on December 19, 2024, were officiated by MDL’s Director of Shipbuilding, Biju George. Key Indian Coast Guard officials, including DIG Shajen Kurian and DIG Alankar Singh, were also present to mark the occasion. These developments are part of MDL’s strategic efforts to support India’s growing need for state-of-the-art naval vessels.
Transforming Coastal Defence with Fast Patrol Vessels
The Fast Patrol Vessel project represents an ambitious endeavour valued at ₹1,070.47 crore. MDL has been entrusted with the design, construction, and delivery of 14 high-speed vessels. Each vessel is designed to exceed speeds of 33 knots, powered by advanced waterjet propulsion systems and high-speed diesel engines.
These naval defence projects underscore the importance of coastal patrolling and fisheries protection, with the FPVs equipped to perform additional roles such as escorting convoys, conducting search and rescue missions, and offering logistical support. The vessels are dual-class certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), ensuring superior performance and safety standards.
The first Fast Patrol Vessel is scheduled for delivery in March 2026, heralding a new era of agile and versatile maritime defence capabilities for the Indian Coast Guard.
Offshore Patrol Vessels: Enhancing Maritime Security
In addition to the FPV project, MDL is spearheading the production of six Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) under a separate contract valued at ₹1,614.89 crore. These vessels, featuring twin controllable pitch propellers and 9000 kW engines, are engineered to achieve speeds exceeding 23 knots.
The NGOPVs are primarily intended for coastal and offshore patrolling, with added functionalities in anti-piracy, anti-smuggling operations, and search and rescue missions. Classified under High-Speed Craft (HSC) rules, the vessels reflect MDL’s dedication to advancing cutting-edge naval defence technology. The first vessel is slated for delivery by July 2027, with the second to follow in December 2027.
Strategic Contributions to Naval Defence
The production of these vessels not only underscores MDL’s pivotal role in India’s naval defence projects but also highlights the country’s growing expertise in indigenous defence manufacturing. By integrating high-speed performance, multi-role capabilities, and advanced design, MDL continues to strengthen India’s maritime security infrastructure.
With these developments, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is poised to play a transformative role in India’s defence strategy, ensuring the Indian Coast Guard is equipped to address evolving challenges in maritime security and coastal protection.
