West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, a key player in the newly-formed opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A., recently declared that her primary objective is to end the current BJP rule, dismissing ambitions to become the prime minister.
The Trinamool Congress leader made this statement during her party’s annual Martyr’s Day rally, emphasizing that her only interest is in toppling the incumbent government.
Mamata Banerjee’s remarks follow similar statements from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, both of whom expressed no interest in assuming the Prime Minister’s role. The Trinamool Congress supremo known for her vehement criticism of the Centre, extended her reproach towards the ongoing Manipur crisis, reprimanding the BJP’s approach towards it.
Questioning the central government’s lack of intervention in Manipur where ethnic clashes have claimed over 160 lives, Mamata Banerjee compared the situation to West Bengal’s panchayat polls, which saw numerous central teams deployed. She further expressed solidarity with the Manipur people and affirmed the opposition alliance’s commitment to ousting the BJP.
In a clear warning, Mamata Banerjee predicted a bleak future for democracy should the BJP continue its rule. Voicing her support for the 26-party opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A., she dismissed any personal political ambitions, stating her sole focus is on challenging the BJP’s rule in the 2024 elections.
