In a shocking turn of events, Captain Ivan Andaur, aged 56, pilot of the LATAM Airlines flight LA505 flying from Miami to Santiago, Chile, passed away mid-flight due to sudden illness, leading the plane to divert its route and land in Panama City. The incident occurred three hours post-takeoff on Monday, August 14.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner bearing the registration CC-BGI, had taken off with 271 passengers on board. Three hours into the journey, Captain Andaur reportedly required urgent medical attention, prompting him to exit the flight deck. He tragically collapsed soon after, with fellow crew members rushing to his aid. Despite the quick response, the crew felt the need to make an emergency landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, where medical professionals declared Captain Andaur deceased upon the plane’s arrival. A proud LATAM employee, Captain Andaur had dedicated 25 years of his life to the airline.

LATAM Airlines, in its official statement, expressed profound sorrow over the unfortunate incident. They praised Captain Andaur’s 25-year-long exemplary service, noting his unwavering professionalism and commitment. While emphasizing that the crew adhered to all safety measures during the crisis, the airline offered heartfelt condolences to Captain Andaur’s family.

Following the distressing event, the LATAM aircraft continued its journey from Panama City, reaching Santiago in 5 hours and 31 minutes on Tuesday, August 15.

While such incidents of pilot incapacitation are uncommon, 2023 has witnessed a few similar occurrences. Earlier this year, during a Southwest Airlines flight from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Columbus, Ohio, a pilot felt unwell shortly after departure, leading to an unscheduled landing back in Las Vegas. Fortunately, in that instance, an off-duty commercial pilot was available to assist.
