Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project : BHEL wins contract to erect third and fourth units

Nuclear power industry news : BHEL has won an INR 4,400 crore contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for erecting the third and fourth units of the 6,000MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu.

In this connection, the state-owned BHEL will work on the erection of the two 1GW turbine generator islands of the nuclear power plant in southern India.

BHEL said that it prevailed amid a tough competition to bag the contract. The company also became the lowest bidder for the erection of the reactor side equipment for the two units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.

The company had also erected the turbine generator islands for units 1 and 2 of the nuclear power plant in Koodankulam in the Tirunelveli district.

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project will have a total of six nuclear reactors. While the first two units, each of 1GW capacity, were commissioned between 2013 and 2016.

India and Russia inked a pact with for the third and fourth units of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in March 2015, which was worth INR 330,00 crore. Last April, Reliance Infrastructure was awarded an EPC contract worth INR 10.81 billion from NPCIL for units three and four of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project.
