KBR secures project management contract for Lobito Refinery in Angola

KBR (NYSE: KBR) has announced securing a project management contract from Sonangol for the design and construction of a new 200,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery in Lobito, Angola. This project marks a cornerstone in Angola’s stride towards achieving energy independence and positions the Lobito Refinery as one of the most ambitious energy infrastructure endeavors in the region.

Under the contract’s terms, KBR will oversee the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase execution, integrating its comprehensive project management services. The Lobito Refinery Project is set to significantly bolster Angola’s capacity to produce fuel products by 200%, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the nation’s fuel production capabilities.

The collaboration between KBR and Sonangol extends over two decades, signifying a longstanding partnership in developing Angola’s natural resources. KBR’s prior completion of the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase in early 2023 laid the groundwork for a cost-effective design meeting Sonangol’s business objectives. This design not only adheres to advanced emission standards but also aligns with KBR’s commitment to environmental stewardship, incorporating innovations in the refinery’s cooling system that reduce river water consumption and wastewater treatment requirements by 30%.
