Kalki 2898 AD smashes records! Prabhas’ sci-fi epic soars beyond Rs 584cr in India

“Kalki 2898 AD”, an epic sci-fi action film starring Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, continues its stellar run at the Indian box office, amassing an impressive Rs 584.32 crore by its third Monday. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film is set in a dystopian future post-Mahabharata and features a star-studded ensemble including Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Disha Patani, Vijay Devarakonda, Dulquer Salmaan, and Mrunal Thakur.

The film opened to a phenomenal Rs 414.85 crore in its first week and added Rs 128.5 crore in the second, according to the film trade portal Sacnilk. Despite being in its third week, “Kalki 2898 AD” raked in Rs 6 crore on the third Friday, Rs 14.35 crore on Saturday, Rs 16.45 crore on Sunday, and Rs 4.3 crore on Monday.

In stark contrast, Kamal Haasan’s “Indian 2” and Akshay Kumar’s “Sarfira” struggled to capture audience interest. “Indian 2” earned just under Rs 4 crore on its fourth day, bringing its total to Rs 62.3 crore. “Sarfira,” marking Kumar’s ninth box office failure, garnered less than Rs 2 crore on the same day, totaling a mere Rs 13.40 crore. Post-“Sooryavanshi,” Kumar’s films, including “Atrangi Re,” “Bachchan Pandey,” “Samrat Prithviraj,” “Raksha Bandhan,” “Ram Setu,” “Selfiee,” “Mission Raniganj,” and “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan” have seen significant underperformance, though “OMG 2,” featuring Kumar in a supporting role, was a success, primarily driven by lead actor Pankaj Tripathi.

Box Office Analysis:

– “Kalki 2898 AD” achieves a landmark collection, reinforcing Prabhas and Deepika Padukone’s star power.

– “Indian 2” and “Sarfira” fail to meet expectations, highlighting a challenging phase for Kamal Haasan and Akshay Kumar.

“Kalki 2898 AD’s” box office success is not just a testament to its high-octane narrative and stellar cast but also highlights the shift in audience preferences towards well-crafted sci-fi narratives in Indian cinema. The film’s ability to sustain strong earnings into the third week, despite new releases, underscores its broad appeal and the effective execution of its thematic elements.
