Jupiter Electric Mobility advances rail transport with new battery technology
Jupiter Electric Mobility Private Limited, a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL), in collaboration with Log9 Materials Private Limited, has achieved significant advancements in Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LFP) battery technology for rail applications. This achievement underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of rail transport in India.
Key Achievements and Certifications
- RDSO Certification for Non-AC Coaches: Jupiter Electric has successfully completed a six-month trial of its 11.2 kWh LFP battery pack for rail coaches, earning the distinction of being the first company to receive certification from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). This certification is a critical step in advancing battery technology within Indian Railways.
- Contract Awarded by Siemens: Demonstrating trust in Jupiter’s battery solutions, Siemens has awarded Jupiter a purchase order for the supply of 36 auxiliary batteries, each with a capacity of 72.8 kWh, for 9 Vande Bharat Trainsets. The 72.8 kWh LFP battery pack has also received RDSO approval, further validating its performance and safety.
- Technical Qualification by BHEL: The 72.8 kWh LFP battery pack has been technically qualified by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for use in Vande Bharat Trainsets. This qualification from a major player in the railway sector signifies the robustness and excellence of Jupiter’s battery solutions.
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons, highlighted the significance of these developments, stating, “These accomplishments underscore our steadfast dedication to innovation and excellence in railway technology. The RDSO certification, the confidence shown by Siemens, and the technical qualification by BHEL are clear indicators of the superior quality and dependability of our LFP battery solutions. Given the significant demand from Indian Railways and the shift from conventional energy sources towards sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, we believe this business can emerge as a significant contributor to overall revenues over a medium to long-term horizon.”
The strategic developments by Jupiter Electric Mobility signify a major leap forward in the electrification and modernization of the Indian Railway system. The integration of LFP battery technology is not only a testament to the company’s innovation capabilities but also aligns with the global shift towards more sustainable and efficient transportation solutions.
