Jindal Steel & Power embraces EVs and solar energy in sustainability push
In an ambitious move toward environmental sustainability and achieving its Net Zero goals, Jindal Steel & Power (JSP), a frontrunner in the Indian steel production industry, has made a significant leap by integrating electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy into its operations. The company has recently announced the deployment of 10 electric buses and 27 electric SUVs at its Angul unit located in Odisha, India, marking a pivotal moment in its commitment to decarbonization efforts and environmental stewardship.
The initiative was inaugurated by Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel & Power, who underscored the company’s dedication to sustainable growth and environmental care. “At Jindal Steel and Power, we are dedicated to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship,” Jindal articulated. He emphasized that the adoption of electric vehicles, along with the commissioning of substantial solar installations at the Angul unit, are critical steps towards the company’s Net Zero ambition and crafting a cleaner planet for forthcoming generations.
JSP Angul’s strategy encompasses the procurement of a total of 27 electric buses and 45 electric SUVs, aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions at the plant and improving operational safety by mitigating the use of two-wheelers on-site. The company is committed to adhering to global standards in the sourcing and manufacturing of these EVs, ensuring a transition that is not only environmentally beneficial but also safe and reliable.
Further reinforcing its commitment to green energy, JSP Angul has also commissioned a rooftop solar plant capable of generating 21 million units annually. This venture is poised to diminish the unit’s CO2 emissions by 18,000 tons each year, an achievement equating to the environmental advantage of planting around 360,000 trees over a decade.
Through these initiatives, Jindal Steel & Power is not only advancing its own sustainable development goals but also establishing new benchmarks for the Indian steel industry. By embracing electric vehicles and renewable energy sources, JSP is leading the way towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future, demonstrating the pivotal role of industry leaders in the global transition towards cleaner energy and reduced carbon footprints.
The company’s investment in electric vehicles and solar energy exemplifies a significant stride towards mitigating environmental impact and showcases the potential for large-scale industrial operations to contribute positively to global sustainability efforts.
